Flexible and remote work arrangements allow companies to attract and retain top talent. According to a 2017 study by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, regular telecommuting grew 115% in the past decade, nearly 10 times faster than the rest of the workforce. Data suggest that prospective employees are more likely to accept offers from companies that offer variety in work arrangements.
Key aspects of remote work are about distance – people in involved in the working relationship are not co-located, and information, products and services are delivered over distance, and must communicate over distance, requiring effective use of digital tools. In an office, proximity and physical presence give others visibility; they can see what you are doing, and check in on you whenever they want, and that builds trust. Many companies reluctant to allow remote work cite concerns that they don’t always have the same visibility into the work, nor easy access to the remote workers. These companies often lack the mindsets, skills, and techniques to ensure people everywhere can produce results.
